CWS Condemns Administration’s Plan to Deny All Asylum Seekers

Closing the border is about nativist policy goals, not public health

Washington, D.C.: Rev. John L. McCullough, President and CEO of Church World Service released the following statement in response to reports that the administration seeks to violate U.S. and international law by turning back all asylum seekers at the southern border:

“Crises test who we are as a nation. The administration’s decision is wrong and immoral and will endanger more lives. Closing our southern border to people asking for protection from persecution is about President Trump’s nativist policy goals — not public health. CWS urges the administration to respond to this public health crisis by screening and welcoming asylum seekers, suspending immigration enforcement activities, and releasing detained immigrants while providing access to medical care.

Instead, President Trump’s administration has chosen to respond to this crisis by sending masked officers to raid families on their first day of social isolation and threats of more travel bans. Now is the time to listen to public health experts, resist medical prejudice and scapegoating, and uphold the best of who we are.”
