CWS Slams President Trump’s Emergency Declaration, Points to “Moral Emergency” Created by President’s Policies and Rhetoric

Trumps “invasion of our country” rhetoric is false, dehumanizing, and racist

Washington, DC – In response to reports that President Trump will declare a National Emergency in order to force his immoral wall on the American people, Rev. John L. McCullough, President and CEO of Church World Service issued the following statement:

“President Trump’s latest attempt to circumvent Congress by declaring a national emergency is immoral and likely illegal. It ignores the constitutional safeguards against using the military to enforce domestic law and the fact that border crossings are at a historic low. The only emergency is the moral and humanitarian emergency President Trump created when he turned away and separated vulnerable families who were seeking asylum and merely asking the United States to live up to its values.”

Earlier today, faith leaders issued a statement strongly opposing a national emergency declaration and decried the immorality of a border wall. CWS’s previous statements on the border wall and the administration’s attacks on asylum seekers can be found here.
