We are in an unprecedented time in the United States, a country with a proud history of welcoming immigrants and refugees. CWS has played a role in this important work since 1946, welcoming hundreds of thousands of refugees who are weary from the journey behind them and hopeful about what lies ahead.
On Friday January 27, U.S. President Trump signed an Executive Order that made a massive impact on the lives of millions of people. Included in the order:
- suspending the admission of all refugees to the U.S. for 120 days;
- suspending resettlement of all Syrian refugees indefinitely;
- reducing the overall number of refugees to be admitted to the U.S. in FY 2017 from 110,000 to 50,000;
- and placing a 30-day ban on issuing visas to nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya.
The EO effectively defunds the entire domestic resettlement network. The 120-day ban will force CWS and the other eight national resettlement agencies to severely reduce services to refugees already resettled to the U.S., stop legal assistance programs aimed at family reunification and lay off critical staff.
This is a time of uncertainty. But it is not a time to give up. We will not stop fighting for those we serve.
Please stand with us, choosing hope over fear. Join us as we send a strong message to the world that refugees and immigrants are welcome.
With your support, we won’t stop fighting. We are truly #Greateras1.
