Take Action Protect Immigrants and Asylum Seekers
On January 25, President Trump announced that the U.S. government will force local police officers to serve as immigration enforcement officers. Such proposals would reverse years of intentional, community-based policing efforts that are vital to public safety in neighborhoods across the country. This decision jeopardizes the trust between immigrant communities and local police and does not make cities across the United States any safer.
President Trump also announced that the U.S. government would begin building a wall across the U.S. southern border, detain families and children who cross the border, and turn away vulnerable asylum seekers, returning them to the violence and persecution they fled. Walling off America is an affront to our nation’s values of family unity, compassion, and welcome.
Call the White House and your Senators and Representatives today and tell them you support policies that limit local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, protect asylum seekers, and welcome immigrants.
This decision would punish cities that allow police to focus on community priorities rather than target people based on their immigration status. When all individuals can report dangerous situations and seek protection from violence without the fear of being deported and separated from their families, safety increases for everyone. This decision would also cost taxpayers billions of dollars and fail to live up to our moral and legal obligations to protect those in need.
Tell the White House and Congress that you stand in solidarity with all members of our communities, including immigrants and asylum seekers, as well as the states and localities committed to protecting them.
Together, we must stand with cities that utilize community-policing efforts to create safer communities and provide our undocumented brothers and sisters the ability to live without fear of local law enforcement. Now is the time to come together to reject a border wall, policies that fail to protect vulnerable populations, and discrimination.
