Yesterday, President Trump extended and expanded his executive order issued on April 22 banning many immigrants from the United States and prolonging family separation through December 31, 2020. This is yet another effort by the administration to push its anti-immigrant agenda, this time by exploiting a public health crisis. This executive order is immoral and diametrically opposed to family values, as it prolongs the suffering of families, including parents, siblings, and adult or married children of U.S. citizens, as well as spouses and unmarried children of green card holders seeking reunification through the family immigration system. The expanded order does not apply to refugees but applies to an H1-B or H-2B visa, and their family members; a J visa coming to work as an intern, trainee, teacher, camp counselor, au pair, or summer work travel program, and their family members; and
an L visa and their family members. For more information on the extension of the proclamation, click here.
During this unprecedented global pandemic, it is unconscionable that the administration is trying to divide our communities, rather than protect all of our neighbors. Banning immigrants serves only to impair community response to this pandemic and will do absolutely nothing to stop this virus that is already here. As people who care about our immigrants and families, we must make our voices heard to Members of Congress that we reject this anti-family, anti-immigrant executive order.

Sample Email: “I’m your constituent from [CITY/TOWN], and [as a person of faith] I urge you to reject the extension and expansion of the administration’s immoral, anti-family, and anti-immigrant executive order initially signed by Trump on April 22 and extended yesterday. I am outraged that this administration is prolonging family separation and banning immigrants under a false guise of public health and economic concerns. Banning immigrants serves only to impair community response to this pandemic and will do absolutely nothing to stop this virus that is already here. Reuniting families contributes to stability, prosperity, and stronger communities. Please do everything in your power to see that the administration reverses this detrimental executive order. My community welcomes immigrants, and I urge you to reflect the best of our nation by supporting family unity and our immigrant neighbors.”
