TELL CONGRESS to Keep Families Together and and Reject Funding for Family Incarceration and Deportation

Action Alerts

Right now, Congress is considering millions of additional taxpayer dollars to expand family incarceration and deportation force to tear families and communities apart. On Wednesday (July 25th), the House Appropriations Committee will consider a proposal that would detain an unprecedented 44,000 people, expand the deportation force to tear families apart, and further militarize communities living along the southern U.S. border. The administration’s cruel and unnecessary jailing of families, asylum seekers, and immigrants already requires billions of dollars every year. That means millions of additional funding to balloon an already bloated immigration detention and deportation scheme. Congress has the “power of the purse” and must defund the deportation and detention force & de-militarize the border.

Family incarceration is not a solution to family separation. Reports have documented systemic physical and sexual abuse, lack of medical care, especially for vulnerable populations, and other harmful practices in ICE custody — without any accountability. ICE and CBP have operated with impunity for years, resulting in an unchecked machinery behind unjust deportation, detention, and border militarization. It is critical that Senators and Representatives hear loudly and clearly that their constituents want them to see immediate family reunification for separated families, utilize non-restrictive, community-based alternatives to detention (ATDs), and cut funding to detention, deportation, and border militarization.

CALL MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE TODAY

Please call the Representatives listed under your state. If your state is not listed, please call the Chair (Rep. Frelinghuysen) and Ranking Member (Rep. Lowey).

Sample Script: “I’m your constituent from [CITY/TOWN], and [as a person of faith] I urge you to reduce funding for detention, deportation, and border militarization and to exert more oversight and accountability over ICE and CBP, which have operated with unchecked impunity for years. I don’t want Congress to write the administration a check to expand family incarceration, detain an unprecedented 44,000 people, and fuel the deportation force that targets my community members. Jailing families, separating children, and criminalizing migrants and people seeking protection is morally reprehensible. Congress should direct the administration to utilize community-based alternatives to detention and restore the family case management program. I call on you to see the administration stop family incarceration and family separation, and immediately reunify families.”
