Trump Administration’s Decision to Expand Detention of Asylum Seekers is Indefensible

Decision is yet another example of the administration’s efforts to undermine protection of asylum seekers from violence and persecution.

Washington, D.C. – CWS strongly condemns Attorney General Barr’s decision in Matter of M-S which further victimizes individuals and families seeking asylum by gutting their right to a bond hearing. The inhumane policy is a terrible blow to those seeking protection at the U.S. border and is set to go into effect on July 15th, 2019.

“The intentions of this cruel policy are clear: to detain more asylum seekers – including families – and to justify the indefensible policy of family separation,” said CWS President and CEO, Rev. John L. McCullough. “At a time when families are running for their lives, this administration is taking away their only hope for safety. This is a devastating affront to American values that we cannot accept. We urge faith communities across the nation to join together and demand that the administration allow asylum seekers to be released on bond and equitably process all people seeking protection in the United States, as required by current law.”
