Right now, the Senate is considering a harmful spending package that would further militarize border communities, turn asylum seekers back to harm, and reverse anti-trafficking protections. None of the policies in Trump’s proposal would provide permanent solutions for dreamers or individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), who are facing threats of deportation since President Trump terminated DACA for 800,000 immigrant youth and ended TPS for 300,000 individuals.
As the longest shutdown in history enters its 33rd day, faith leaders have shared how the consequences of lost paychecks and slowed services are dire for millions of individuals and families, especially those facing poverty and food insecurity. Senators must work to responsibly reopen the government as soon as possible — without endangering our immigrant neighbors. Giving in to this proposal would be allowing the administration to continue its campaign of cruelty against immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers via unjust detention, deportation, and family separation.
