EL SALVADOR AGREEMENT IS LETHAL AND ABSURD
The administration’s new agreement is a farce and threatens the system of international protection
Washington, DC- In response to reports that the administration will sign a deal with El Salvador to force asylum seekers from other countries to remain in El Salvador, Rev. John L. McCullough, President and CEO of Church World Service issued the following statement:
“El Salvador is one of the most dangerous countries in the hemisphere. Why then, is Acting Homeland Security Secretary McAleenan sending people who are running for their lives to a country that is unable to protect its own people?
From family separation to the asylum ban and the Remain in Mexico policy, this administration has made it clear that the lives of people seeking protection are disposable in their crusade to meet cruel and immoral campaign promises. The agreement is a farce and makes a mockery of the life-saving system of asylum.
All people deserve a safe place to call home. President Trump must reverse this lethal decision before it goes into effect or the lives lost will be on his hands.”
Since 1946, Church World Service has supported refugees, immigrants and other displaced individuals, in addition to providing sustainable relief and development solutions to communities that wrestle with hunger and poverty.
